Research Interest: Premodern Chinese literature; Chinese Poetry, Classical Chinese poetry, literary criticism, comparative literature and philosophy.
Zong-qi Cai has authored, co-authored, edited, and co-edited 15 scholarly books in English (three forthcoming in 2022) published by prominent academic presses and has to his credit 8 scholarly books in Chinese (three forthcoming in 2022) published by distinguished Chinese academic presses ( see Books). He has also published numerous articles on classical Chinese poetry, literary criticism, comparative literature and philosophy (for pdf files of these articles, see Articles).
Cai is the general editor of How to Read Chinese Literature, a ten-book series by Columbia University Press, the general editor of the Brill book series Chinese Texts in the World, the co-founding editor-in-chief of Journal of Chinese Literature and Culture (JCLC) by Duke University Press, editor of Prism: Theory and Modern Chinese Literature (a Duke Journal launched in 2019), the editor-in-chief of Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies 嶺南學報.
Cai is the host of the How to Read Chinese Poetry Podcast and the host of the Forum on Chinese Poetic Culture (FCPC). JCLC is co-sponsored by the International Academy for Chinese Studies, Peking University and the Forum on Chinese Poetic Culture, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Cai has been chosen by the Council of Editors of Learned Journals (CELJ) as 2020 Distinguished Editor for his outstanding work for the Journal of Chinese Literature and Culture; PRISM: Theory and Modern Chinese Literature, and the Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies.
